FALLOUT 4:  Rumored To Take Place In Boston?

According to an anonymous rumor on Reddit fallout 4 will take place in Boston. Now who knows if there is any truth to this…. but I think it does make a lot of sense for many reason including the history of Boston and the references to the Commonwealth within Fallout 3.. no matter how slight they were.. since the Commonwealth was really only mentioned in the quest “The Replicated Man”.. but the only other real references to areas outside of Washington D.C in Fallout 3 had to do with the West Coast.. Part of which we explored in Fallout: New Vegas…  but anyway .. here is what the user said:

“The rumors are true, Fallout 4 will take place in Boston. In case you haven’t heard, Bethesda has recently been scoping out and researching Boston. They also have a strong connection to MIT. I may or may not be an MIT employee. But that’s really all I can say for fear of losing my job.
I am telling you it will take place in Boston.”

My Thoughts on the matter:
Personally I actually think it makes perfect sense that fallout 4 could very well indeed take place in Boston for some of these reasons below..

– Technology:
MIT: is all about advances in technology and Boston is focused on education, medicine & biotechnology,
Fallout has a deep history with different factions and their struggle to attain/control advanced technology.. This makes perfect sense for a fallout game to be set with a place like MIT as a main focus point..  The concept of Advanced Technology in a Post-Apocalyptic setting is one of the main focuses within the Fallout Universe. Let us not forget that the Commonwealth was discussed slightly in “The Replicated Man” Quest in Fallout 3.

– Water & Water Sources:
Boston has a great connection and association to drinking water and water in general because of its location. All of the Fallout games are centered around water and water sources. It would make sense that Fallout 4 could very well have been chosen to be set in Boston for this reason alone… but.. throw MIT into the mix and well? Things are starting to add up aren’t they? The associations people make with the city & it’s water just fits the Fallout Universe perfectly and perhaps more so than any other possible location especially on the East Coast.. perhaps maybe even makes more sense than the West Coast considering Fallout: New Vegas already focused on the Hoover Dam.

What about the song by The Standells “Dirty Water”? This song in itself is a perfect reason why Boston is a perfect match for Fallout 4.  I mean come on! The song is called “DIRTY WATER” & is about Boston and it’s water and harsh setting.. Now listen to the song and listen or read a long with the lyrics and think about the Fallout Universe.. Wouldn’t those lyrics fit perfectly as you roam around a post-apocalyptic Boston set in the Fallout world? Not to mention that “Dirty Water” is an item within the game.. Okay.. Okay I know the song isnt from the 1950’s… but even if it isn’t playing in the game.. Think about the association people already have with Boston and it’s water because of that song and also just because water is already associated with Boston anyway. I do think that song could definitely be in Fallout 4 if it were to take place in Boston.. sure it’s not from the 1950’s.. but I think it would be really important to include it if the game does indeed take place in Boston.. I mean the lyrics would fit so perfectly to the post apocalyptic setting as well as keep people tied to the associations that they make with Boston on various levels.

Rich American History:
Boston among the reasons such as MIT/Water and yes.. a song from the 1960’s.. has a great connection to American history. The founding of the country, The Boston Tea Party, The Boston Massacre, many important historical landmarks, the industrial revolution, there is even a group from the 1840’s called the “Brahmin Elite” which could easily tie in with the Fallout world and the often humorous and sometimes falsely remembered bits of history.. considering the :Brahmin: in the Fallout world I see this as a perfect little side quest of a group of people that call themselves the “Brahmin Elite” that are kinda like the Followers Of The Apocalypse in Fallout: New Vegas which would fit within the actual history of Boston and tie in with the fallout world.. Hmm… I may have stumbled on something there.. Well, so yea.. American History plays an important role in the Fallout Universe as we have seen in the previous games.. and I would imagine Bethesda would want to continue this theme from Fallout 3 and how it was incorporated with the games story/setting. Boston is once again a perfect match as far as this goes..

The city / residential areas would work well development wise in keeping things similar to fallout 3’s locations/feel/story etc.. and the size of Boston and it’s surrounding areas as far as the world map size seems like a better fit for the size that Bethesda games usually are in square miles… even if it’s not entirely accurate.. i think Boston would make more sense on a development level.. and I see Boston as making more sense as a choice for the limited size of the world map that we have seen in previous Bethesda games like Fallout 3 and Skyrim.. I think it at least makes a bit more sense than say New York in terms of size and development time/assets/cost etc.. Boston is also not too far from washington dc which makes sense in terms of the next game after fallout 3 & its story/setting/history etc…  and In terms of real life.. the setting of Boston makes more sense in game development also since it makes the most sense in having to foot the bill for sending out developers to do research and to get reference material etc… This in part is why they chose D.C since yes.. its their home.. yes it has rich american history etc.. but it was also cheaper for them to get reference material for the game and also something they knew about and could easily do research about.. and most importantly have fun creating..   New York would probably be too daunting as far as development/reference/story/and funding would be much more expensive for many many reasons… If it is true that Bethesda has strong ties to MIT well….?   And don’t you think over all that Boston would be a bit more fun to get reference of/history etc.. for the developers than New York or anywhere else on the East Coast for a Fallout game as well?

Maybe I am biased since I lived in Massachusetts for 21 years and was born outside of Boston and lived in Medford when I was a babe..  but you know what.. I think Fallout 4 will take place in Boston. If it doesn’t… that’s okay.. but to be honest.. I think it really really is the best suited choice for Fallout 4. I think Boston has the most supporting evidence in terms of creating a new Fallout game that not only keeps with the original games, but also has Bethesda’s own touch to it. Here I am just talking about the reasons why Boston makes sense.. and not even touching on why the Commonwealth as a whole would make sense for Fallout 4…

Take from this what you will.. But I am excited just by the idea of Fallout 4 taking place in Boston (if you couldn’t already tell) and as someone that lives in the area as well as someone that has a pretty good understanding of how creativity works in both story telling and game development.. well I just thought I would give people my two cents as to why Boston makes perfect sense for Fallout 4.. even if.. its just a rumor and proves to be false..
